Experience

Co-founder, Writer & Editor - Two Humans and a Dog

My current role is as a writer & editor for my travel website www.twohumansandadog.com

I co-founded this website with my husband after we both left our careers to focus on our love of adventure travel...alongside our dog!

Together, we have learnt web design, sharpened our photography skills and delved into SEO and copy writing as a full time pursuit.

My written content offers an informative, honest perspective of adventure travel and usually involves how to bring your dog along for the fun. I have written extensively about a 6-month roadtrip around mainland Europe, a month in Japan and our 6 months of living and working in the Isle of Skye.

Through the website, I have secured partnerships and affiliations with relevant organisations such as Trusted Housesitters, Workaway and Dog Avenue.

I am always open to opportunities to collaborate and welcome ideas for guest blogs.

English Tutor - Sherpa and Tute

After years of freelance tutoring, I now work as a contractor for two tutoriing virtual school organisations: Sherpa and Tute. My specialism is English Literature and Language for 11 - 18 year olds. I have also written articles to support students and parents in their studies (see writing samples).

Education and Community Outreach Manager - The King's Theatre, Portsmouth

I led a successful community and education department for the historic King's Theatre, Portsmouth. My favourite part of the role was working collaboratively to create tours, workshops and resources to engage different groups with the world of the theatre. I created lively sessions ranging from Theatre Tots to Dementia Friendly Film Nights. In addition, I adapted our programmes to reach participants virtually during the Covid-19 lockdowns andl later oversaw the safe reopening.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of the role was the creation of tours. These would often involve scripting parts for our tour guides to lead in character. Ghost tours, technical tours and history tours were ever popular. However, I would also look for unique tours to support the performances at the theatre.

A range of writing styles and tasks were integral to the success of the department. From case studies and funding bids to child-friendly worksheets, every day I had to adaprt the style, tone and purpose of my writing to engage others in the theatre's vision.

English Resource Creator - Doc Society

I was selected to lead in the creation of educational resources for Doc Academy (the education arm of Doc Society). This was a fascinating role which entailed watching new documentary films and television series (from Channel 4, BBC and Netflix) and creating educational resoruces to support their use in schools. This role demanded a wide range of academic knowledge and interest to engage with challenging subject matter and think imaginatively about how to deliver this through tailored academic materials.

I really enjoyed working collaboratively with the in house design team to create colourful, innovative resources whilse bringing my English teaching expertise to a diverse range of subject matter. The most successful example being a set of lessons aimed at GCSE English students to accompany a climate change documentary Thank You For the Rain

Head of English - Mayville High School

I was proud to lead a dedicated and diverse team in the delivery of the English curriculum at this school. As head of English, I was responsible for ensuring every child achieved their potential and engaged with the subject. I loved thinking creatively about introducing students to literature in a dynamic way through my written resources.

During my time as department head, I also had responsibility for whole school litearcy, debating and extra curricular activites. The culmination of this was a month long expedtion to Ecuador in summer 2018. The adventure travel experience kick started an interest in further exploration and in writing about these experiences.

Skills

Directing

Having co-founded the theatre company Hello Id (Brighton 2005), I loved producing and directing shows for the Brighton and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. My proudest achievement came in 2006 when my production of Othello was nominated for Best Actor, Best Director and Best Production at the Fringe First Awards.

I developed this skill further whilst teaching by directing for the Shakespeare Schools Festival for over ten years. It was a joy to lead groups of young people in unique productions of Shakespeare's plays as part of the UK's largest youth drama festival.
